Do we need borders to define our identity?

"In reality we don’t have roots, we have feet”, says journalist and filmmaker Milène Larsson, after commenting on how nationalism preys on our emotional need to belong. The crisis at Europe’s doorstep, often referred to as “the migrant” or “refugee” crisis, has been in the news for the last three years. Despite it representing "one of the most complicated ethical issues of our time", as Milène describes it, it is often reduced to a matter of people desperate to enter versus the forces tasked to keep them out. Milène uses her first-hand experience along Europe’s frontiers to question the borders and norms we often take for granted, and argues that without reassessing our values, we risk enforcing oppressive structures, which are costing us our common humanity and, ultimately, the future survival of our human family.
